Ocean Roots Festival – Resilience in Crazy Times

Updated: 6 days ago

To celebrate our continued survival of volcano eruptions, earthquakes, pandemics and freak weather we invite you to the Ocean Roots Festival.

A celebration of connection, creativity, and community on the coast of Amed, Bali

Nestled between the mountains and the sea in East Bali, Ocean Roots Festival is a grounded, but heartfelt gathering born from a love of the ocean and a commitment to exploring the art and science of resilience, a mixture of free, donation based and ticketed events and experiences.

Over the course of seven vibrant days, we weave together mind/body practices, freediving, music, movement, storytelling, and nature advocacy, creating a space for deeper connection: to ourselves, to each other, and to the Earth we share.

Inspired by Balinese Wisdom: Tri Hita Karana

At the core of the festival is the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, meaning “the three causes of well-being.” It teaches that true harmony is found by nurturing balance in three essential relationships:

  • Parahyangan – Harmony with the divine, spirit, or deeper self

  • Pawongan – Harmony among people and community

  • Palemahan – Harmony with nature and the environment

Each part of our program reflects this sacred triad, turning these timeless teachings into living, breathing experiences for all who attend.

Connection to Self (Parahyangan)

In a world of constant stimulation and noise, we create spaces to turn inward — to explore calm, cultivate resilience, and reconnect with your own body and breath. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or a curious beginner, these offerings are designed to nourish your nervous system and awaken your awareness:

  • Freediving technique & apnea awareness

  • Yoga & guided meditation sessions

  • Pranayama, somatics & nervous system tools

  • Cold immersion and resilience training

  • Experiential workshops on breath, mindset, and inner balance

  • ...and more

Connection to Others (Pawongan)

We believe that healing and resilience are amplified in community. Ocean Roots offers a rich tapestry of opportunities to connect, express, and celebrate with others — without pressure, and often without words. These moments of shared joy and creative collaboration are central to the experience:

  • Contact dance, free movement & mermaiding

  • Live acoustic & electronic music, mantra circles, and DJ sets

  • Storytelling, spoken word, and group voicework

  • Communal dinners, swap markets

  • Group dives, coastal adventures & playful gatherings

  • ...and more

Connection to Nature & Purpose (Palemahan)

Our festival grounds are more than just a venue—they're part of a living ecosystem that includes us all. Recognizing our role as protectors, not destructors, we invite you to engage directly through hands-on conservation efforts, inspiring workshops, insightful talks, and eco-conscious marketplaces. Connect with local and grassroots non-profit organizations dedicated to caring for the environment we share:

  • Interactive workshops on ocean and land protection

  • Film screenings, beach cleanups

  • Community-built eco and swap market for pre-loved goods

  • Collaborations with grassroots initiatives, including:

    • Peduli Alam (plastic & waste reduction)

    • Arka Kinari (climate artivism & music on the sea)

    • Mudfish (eco-literacy for kids)

    • Ocean Prosperity (marine protection)

    • Blue School & Ocean Gardener

    • ...and more to come

Special Guests: Arka Kinari & Filastine + Nova

This year, we’re honored to host Filastine & Nova, the minds behind Arka Kinari — a sailing, music, and climate storytelling project that’s inspiring coastal communities across Indonesia and beyond. Their performance is more than entertainment: it’s a multisensory call to action for a more resilient, interconnected world.
